Tap Me In

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) commonly referred to as tapping, way easier to remember btw, is a combination of ancient Chinese medicine and positive psychology that works to dismantle negative thought patterns.

Similar in theory to acupressure or acupuncture, tapping utilizes the body’s energy meridian points. What are meridian points you ask? According to ancient Chinese medicine, meridians are the pathways in the body along which the form of life energy, “chi", flows.

None of us are born with disrupted energy patterns. Trauma, particularly those of childhood and physical and emotional stressors can disrupt the flow of this energy system. Sadly, it will stay disrupted until it is fixed. However, working with EFT to stimulate meridian points by tapping can easily release the flows of energy effectively unblocking stagnant or stuck energy in the body.

Tapping has been shown to effectively provide relief from both mental and physical maladies including chronic pain, emotional problems, disorders, addictions, phobias, PTSD, and physical diseases. Not only does tapping have healing benefits but it has also been correlated to higher levels of goal obtainment related to productivity, organization, learning, and finances.

With simplicity and consistency, we’re talking five minutes a day here, you can actually tap away limiting beliefs, fears, and internal obstacles that have held you back for years. You are literally tapping into your body’s own energy and healing power. This is really a case of being your own best healer. This instant release occurs by focusing your mind on past hurt and trauma or current stress, fear, and anxiety while simultaneously tapping along these energetic meridian points.

Our bodies are more powerful than we can ever imagine. They are filled with life, energy, and a compelling ability for self-healing. Our bodies want to be healthy and vibrant.  Honestly, do you think if your body could answer back it would say “Hey, I really love feeling sluggish, anxious, and depressed? This is fantastic!”  Pretty sure that would be a big fat NO. In fact, I’m confident that if our bodies could speak they would, in fact, be screaming for us to take more loving, better care of them. We receive so much from our physical bodies and something like tapping for just a few minutes is a simple, easy way to give our bodies back some love, care, and attention.

There are about ten main tapping points that you circulate through in the process which include

  • Side of the hand (also known as the karate chop point)

  • Top of the eyebrow (think close to your third eye)

  • Side of your eye (where you “maybe” get a little botox)

  • Under your eye (where bags come to hang after a sleepless night)

  • Under your nose (or above the lip)

  • Chin (that’s easy)

  • Collarbone (or breastbone)

  • Under the arm (right below the armpit)

  • Top of the head. (like patting yourself on the head after a good day)

  • Wrist (like you’re tapping for a pulse). I have found the wrist to be used less frequently in the material that I follow.

I use both the index and middle finger straightened together tapping lightly at the points.

I’ve used tapping to help bring me out of a panic attack, alleviate day-to-day stress, help me focus on being more productive, heal health concerns, and generally just reboot my mood or attitude during an off day.

The first few times definitely feel a bit awkward.  Do you remember being a kid and trying to rub your belly and your head at the same time?  This kind of reminds me of that.  Like any choreography the more you go through the motions the more your body memorizes the routine. I’ve found it helpful to tap in front of a mirror it’s like being in an intimate therapy session but the therapist is you.

With Tapping, you can take control of your own infinite and inherent power.  Tapping is fast, easy, and can be done anywhere. It doesn’t require any fancy gym membership and equipment. There are thousands of free instructional videos on YouTube and Instagram. I’ve linked two of my favorite sites to find extensive resources and videos.  Tap, tap, tap away!
