 Q & A

What are the primary functions of the liver, and why is detoxification so important for overall health?

The liver is responsible for over 400 functions in the body. The most notable include the removal of toxins, metabolization of macronutrients (fats, carbohydrates, and proteins), and supporting digestion with the production of bile, glucose, and cholesterol.

We are constantly exposed to toxins found in tap water, air pollution, foods, alcohol, personal care products, home products, furniture, etc. Our liver naturally detoxifies daily however it wasn’t designed to keep up with the increased level of toxins we expose it to. It’s essential that we do more intentional cleansing and eliminate the toxic buildup so that it can perform its functions optimally.

What are the common signs or symptoms that your liver might need detoxing?

  • Fatigue

  • Brain Fog

  • Skin issues/rashes

  • Difficulty digesting foods, especially fatty foods

  • Body odor

  • Constipation

  • Mood swings

  • Unexplainable weight gain or difficulty losing weight

  • High blood pressure

What are specific foods, supplements, or herbs that are particularly effective for cleansing the liver?

Foods: Beets, carrots, dandelion greens, broccoli sprouts, citrus (especially lemon juice), avocados, walnuts, cruciferous vegetables

Herbs: Milk thistle, dandelion root, burdock root, ginger, garlic, tumeric

Supplements: TUDCA (bodybio or cellcore), N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) (design for health), MSM, binders (cellcore), glutathione, methylated B vitamins, fulvic acid, Liver Sauce (quicksilver scientific).

How do lifestyle factors, such as sleep, exercise, and stress, affect liver health?

Sleep is one of the most crucial factors for liver health. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the liver is most active in detoxifying the body between 1-3 a.m. If you find yourself waking up during this window, it could indicate that your liver is overloaded and struggling with its natural cleansing process. Factors like eating too late at night, drinking alcohol in the evening, and consuming processed foods or excess sugar can disrupt this detoxification cycle and put extra strain on the liver.

Exercise plays a vital role as well. Regular physical activity helps your body sweat, which is one of the ways toxins are excreted. Sweating reduces the burden on the liver and gallbladder, allowing them to focus on processing internal toxins rather than reprocessing those that could be excreted through sweat.

Stress, on the other hand, has a significant impact on liver function. Chronic stress, particularly when accompanied by repressed emotions like anger, frustration, or bitterness, can actually affect the liver’s ability to detoxify efficiently. These emotions, when held onto, tend to “store” in the liver, according to many holistic practices, making it harder for the liver to function optimally.

In short, ensuring good sleep, regular exercise, and managing stress are key lifestyle factors that support liver health and overall detoxification.

Are there any common misconceptions about liver detoxing that you’d like to clarify?

Yes, there are quite a few misconceptions about liver detoxing that need clearing up.

First, many detox protocols out there claim to "cleanse" the liver, but they often miss critical components needed to support all three phases of liver detoxification and the proper excretion of toxins from the body. It’s not just about cleaning the liver; it’s also about ensuring your body can safely flush those toxins out.

On the other hand, some people believe that the liver detoxifies itself naturally and that there’s no need for a cleanse. While the liver does detox on its own, this belief overlooks the fact that we’re exposed to far more chemicals, toxins, and pollutants today than we were in the past. Unless you’re living in nature, fasting, and avoiding modern environmental toxins, your liver likely needs a bit more support.

Another misconception is that stones only form in the kidneys, but they can build up in the liver too. Over time, these stones can block the liver’s ability to function optimally.

Lastly, methods like juice cleanses and fasting are often praised for giving the digestive system a break, but they’re not as effective for liver detox specifically. A proper liver detox requires protocols that not only support the liver itself but also include practices like sweating in a sauna and taking binders to help eliminate the released toxins from your body.

How long does a typical liver detox take, and how often should someone detox their liver?

A typical liver detox for maintenance should be done twice a year, ideally in the spring and fall, and should last around 6–7 days. This helps support the liver’s natural detoxification processes and keeps it functioning optimally.

For a more thorough cleanse, especially if you’re addressing specific liver concerns or want to ensure your liver is functioning at its best, it's recommended to do a liver cleanse once a month, ideally around the new moon. This cycle should continue for 8–12 months or until no more gallstones or toxins are released.

The liver is resilient, but regular detoxification can help it process waste more efficiently, reduce toxin build-up, and improve overall health.

What are some gentle detox practices that can be incorporated into daily routines to keep the liver healthy?

  1. Eat liver-supporting foods: Adding foods like leafy greens, bitter vegetables, and sulfur-rich foods (such as garlic, onions, and cruciferous veggies) can support the liver’s detoxification process. Foods like broccoli sprouts or supplements like Broc Shot are especially rich in sulforaphane, which aids in detox pathways.

  2. Herbal tonics and tinctures: Consuming tonics or teas with herbs like dandelion root and milk thistle is a great way to support liver function. These herbs are known for their cleansing and protective properties.

  3. Sweating regularly: Engaging in activities that make you sweat, like exercise or using a sauna, a few times a week helps the body excrete toxins through the skin, easing the burden on the liver.

  4. Coffee enemas: Incorporating coffee enemas into your routine (about once a week) can help stimulate the liver and gallbladder to release bile, which assists in detoxification.

  5. Limit toxic intake: Avoid or reduce consumption of refined sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, processed foods, and alcohol. These substances are hard on the liver and can increase the toxin load. Cutting down on caffeine and artificial preservatives also gives your liver a break.

How can someone tell if their liver detox is working or if they’re seeing improvements in their liver function?’

One of the first signs of an effective liver detox is improved energy. As your liver processes and removes toxins more efficiently, you’ll likely feel less sluggish and more energized throughout the day. Digestion will feel smoother, as the liver plays a key role in processing fats and aiding in digestion. You may notice less bloating, improved bowel movements, and better overall gut health. Common skin issues like dullness or breakouts may improve, leaving you with a more glowing complexion.

It’s not uncommon to experience some discomfort before feeling improvements. This is often referred to as a “detox reaction” or “healing crisis,” where toxins are being released faster than your body can eliminate them. Symptoms like fatigue, headaches, or mild digestive upset are normal but should subside as your body adjusts.

If you're incorporating liver flushes or coffee enemas into your detox routine, you may physically see gallstones or toxins being released. These can appear as small stones in shades of green, black, beige, or even larger pea-sized lumps, which are signs that your liver and gallbladder are clearing out toxins.

Are there any specific warning signs during a detox that people should watch out for?

Yes, definitely. One of the main signs to watch out for during a detox is when your body’s detox pathways aren’t fully open—meaning you’re not sweating easily, you’re not having regular bowel movements (at least once a day), or you’re feeling blocked in some way. When toxins can’t get out, they start to recirculate in your body, which can cause symptoms like headaches, flu-like feelings, or skin rashes. This is known as a Herxheimer reaction (or "Herx" reaction), and it’s a sign that your body is struggling to process the toxins fast enough.

If you notice this happening, the best thing to do is to slow down your detox. Focus on increasing ways to help your body eliminate toxins, like sweating more (through exercise or saunas), doing enemas, or taking binders (which help trap and remove toxins).

I’m also a big fan of acupuncture, specifically treatments that focus on the liver and gallbladder meridians, as they help with drainage and support overall detox pathways.
